New Jersey Landlord/Tenant Laws

New Jersey Attorney General publishes an online booklet covering applications, leases, security deposits, rent escrow, lead paint hazards, eviction, and where to seek help if problems arise. In reviewing this material, keep in mind that some New Jersey counties and cities have different landlord/tenant laws that may provide additional protections or require that you follow different procedures.

New Jersey required publication for both Tenants and Landlords 'Truth-in-Renting' may be downloaded from this website. Landlords are required to distribute this brochure to their tenants. The booklet is also available in Spanish.

Lead Based Paint Disclosure

Federal law requires that individuals receive certain information before renting (or buying) pre-1978 housing: LANDLORDS must disclose known information on lead-based paint and lead-based paint hazards before leases take effect. Leases must include a disclosure form about lead-based paint.

The New Jersey Housing & Mortgage Finance Agency provides Information pertaining to the Fair Housing Act.
